In the past three months there have been 356 murders in Guatemala, 202 armed attacks, 44 drug deals, 11 kidnappings and six cases of “extortion via a mobile phone”. Guatemala is trying something new in their fight against these extreme crime figures. This time they try it online with a crimemap called Alertos.org?and combine?it with e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, mobile apps and SMS. Guatemala is?ranked?number five of the world when it comes to murder cases?per yearm so it can use some help from citizens to solve them.

In 2010 the police of Honduras, being the “murder capital of the world”, also launched a mobile crimemap for San Pedro Sula, which will be rolled out nationwide?too. However, the use of this “Map?Against Crime” is disappointing when you look at the website. Alertos.org?seems something more interactive, messages can even be posted anonymously, and there is moderation of that process so implausible messages will be removed. The site clearly doesn’t contain all crime, but the adoption of the service among citizens will lead it?into?that right direction. Moreover, the real numbers will not be correct anyway, because many people are too scared to reporting to the police.?
