Hubballi: Police have swung into action against helmetless motorists (Android). The Hubballi-Dharwad police commissionerate, which had earlier dealt with violators with kid gloves – giving roses and flowers to motorists who abided by the rules is now using a mobile app to impose traffic fines.

At major circles, junctions and signals, traffic policemen are taking photographs of helmetless riders and are forwarding them to the traffic management centre (TMC) at the suburban police station, from where a notice is automatically generated using the link to the RTO server.

When BA Padmanayan was the police commissioner, every police station clicked photos of traffic rule violations and downloaded these photos at the TMC. “Sometimes, due to technical errors, police found it difficult to download the photos,” said traffic police constable at KC Circle.

The police commissionerate roped in Rajneesh Ganjyal of Trinity Technologies and Software Solution Private Ltd, which created a software for traffic police. A traffic policeman logs in, mentioning his buckle number as user ID and a password provided by the TMC, after registering the IMEI (international mobile equipment identity) number of the duty police, and mentions the location. Later, traffic police can send photos directly from the spot.

The TMC collects photos in a folder and transmits that folder to a system connected to the RTO server. With this new system and booking cases for violations using BlackBerrys, traffic police in Hubballi-Dharwad booked 8,767 cases from January 1-23, and the number of cases could cross 10,000, said police sources.

Police commissioner Pandurang Rane said all officers have been told to take stern action against traffic rules violators and fine them. “There is no question of halting the drive. Cases will be booked against helmetless motorists; there is no question of yielding to any pressure.”
