groupme

GroupMe is a mobile group messaging app owned by Microsoft. It was launched in May 2010 by the private company GroupMe.?In August 2011, GroupMe delivered over 100 million messages each month and?y June 2012, that number had jumped to 550 million.

GroupMe has a web client as well as mobile apps for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Those who don?t want to use the app can still send and receive GroupMe messages through SMS. Users begin by creating a ?group? and adding contacts. When someone sends a message, everyone in the group can see and respond to it. The app allows users to easily attach and send pictures as well. Users can also send private messages, but only to users who also have the GroupMe app.

GroupMe is by far the most used group messaging application in college. Everyone has one, uses it and loves it. GIF support, the ability to ?like? others messages, even trivial things such as being able to change your name between group chats all make this both a useful and enjoyable application.

Example?case using GroupMe related to revenge porn:

A nude photo of a local high school girl is being shared using popular new apps such as GroupMe.?It started with Snapchat, where you send a photo to someone, and once they open it, they have up to 10 seconds to view it before it disappears.?But?one girl’s picture is still out there, and police are trying to stop those who are sharing it.

Police said a student at Wauwatosa East told the student liaison officer she believed an old boyfriend was sharing a topless photo she sent him on the social media app Snapchat before they broke up. Messages are supposed to disappear after they’re viewed.

He admitted to police he had copied the photo before it disappeared, showed it to friends and then shared it with a group of about five others using an app called Group Me.”?Someone eventually posted it to Instagram.

?If she chose to send the picture then it’s not really the person’s fault for receiving it,? a Brookfield East student explained.

Police interviewed a Brookfield East senior who said he saw the picture on Instagram but doesn’t know who posted it. The documents also reveal the ex-boyfriend shared it with student athletes.?Police said that may be a felony.?Police said many kids are unaware such conduct can result in felony charges like possession of child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child.?Brookfield East?s principal said he will comment once they get more information from police.
